Onslow County is served by the 910 and 472 overlay complex. The 910 area code is the familiar code on most official public numbers in the county, including Onslow County Government Center, Jacksonville City Hall, Onslow County Schools, ONWASA, Jones-Onslow EMC, Onslow Memorial Hospital, the sheriff, local courts, libraries, WIC, and senior services. The 472 area code is newer, but it is not a separate Onslow County neighborhood or a warning sign by itself.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission approved 472 as an all-services overlay for 910, which means both codes cover the same southeast North Carolina geography. New service or added lines may receive 472 after the available 910 number supply is used. Existing 910 customers kept their numbers, so older government and institutional listings still read as 910. Overlay Rules in Onslow County
